From the artist:
Keeping the Darkness Away" was completed in 2019, after my cancer treatment finished. I was seeking to bring more color into my work to reflect the optimism that I was feeling after having been declared Cancer Free. The painting incorporates a photo inkjet print of bedrock from along the shores of Lake Michigan, a major source of inspiration for me. The color of the photograph is enhanced and I emphasized the green transparent surface of the encaustic wax. The green color suggests the positive, glowing life force that I embraced during my healing. After the piece was finished, I realized that it also reflects a darker side of my recovery. The title " Keeping the Darkness Away represents my inner desire to survive vs. fear and dread that my cancer may someday return.
