Join us as we immerse ourselves in the lives and times of the Weimar Republic, the German people’s first taste of Demokratie during a period of extraordinary political, economic and societal turbulence. Tragically sandwiched between the sorry end of Bismarck’s Kaiserreich in 1919 and the very beginning of Adolf Hitler’s diabolical reign in 1933. National demoralization from defeat in war, ruinous hyperinflation via punitive war reparations and sinister political forces arrayed against democracy present Weimar with extreme challenges. Yet Weimar also gives rise to uniquely creative cultural expression which flourishes during the Golden Twenties before being strangled by the great worldwide Depression and rapid ascent of a neo-pagan, anti-Semitic and anti-democratic ideology known as National Socialism.
