SESSION 2: March 26 - May 7

Course Description:

In this 6 week online class, we will watch and discuss influential films that focus on personal, social and societal conflicts. Characters grope with moral and ethical issues we are dealing with today in their interpersonal relationships: generational misunderstandings/conflicts; individual freedom vs. societal responsibility, blind loyalty.

By diving deep into these films you will learn about the socio-historical context of the times, but also analyze the content of the film itself. Although we watch the films in English (subtitles), our discussions are in German and prepared for the B1/B2 level.

You will watch, and discuss:

  • Der Untergang (2004, Oliver Hirschbiegel)
  • Bis ans Ende der Welt (2007, Fatih Akin)
  • Drei Türken und ein Baby (2015, Sinan Akkus)
  • Jonathan (2016, Piotr Lewandowski).

This class offers two independent sessions, and each is 6 weeks long. You can attend one session, or both, simply select the one(s) you want to attend during the registering process.

Class Structure: Students will have the opportunity to talk to their teacher and their classmates in 90 minute online sessions and practice their German in break-out rooms. In addition, students will receive assignments from their teacher.

Online Meeting Times: Saturdays, 9:30-11am CST (online)

Materials: You may be asked to buy these movies. All of them are available in the US, and some may be available for streaming. The instructor will help you with this. You can also use  the website Telescope Film to find out where which film is available.
