DANK Haus Chicago Kinderschule was founded in 1964 and has since been the leading German Language School in the Chicagoland area. Throughout the years, the school has treasured and promoted German language and culture and served as a milestone for building a strong German community. Kinderschule collaborates closely with the Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) - the German Central Agency for Schools Abroad and is a member of PASCH (Worldwide Network of German Schools).

DANK Haus Kinderschule welcomes native-born German children spending time in the USA, children of German-speaking parents who live permanently in the USA, and non-native children who are motivated to learn German. Our curriculum is carefully developed to meet the needs of different types of learners and is aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards for foreign language learning and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Our committed faculty members deliver immersion language classes that foster intellectual growth and reasoning skills through fun activities and age appropriate projects.

Levels 1 through 8 (ages 6 through 14)

Saturdays 9:15am-12:00pm

Children between the ages of 6 and 14* (*cut-off date is September 1) will build foundational language skills by receiving valuable, immersion classroom instruction tailored to the individual needs of each child.  Students are placed  in Levels 1 through 8 according to language ability and age.  Kinderschule bases its curriculum on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).  Level 1 welcomes kids from last years' Kindergarten or new students ages 6+ with no/very little prior German instruction in reading/writing.

 Level 1: A1.1 Level 5: B1.1
 Level 2: A1.2  Level 6: B1.2
 Level 3: A2.1  Level 7: B2.1
 Level 4: A2.2  Level 8: B2.2

Please reference our online Placement Test results when submitting your child’s application for ages 7+.  These are designed to give us a first evaluation of language skill level and starting placement.  Language ability and progress will be closely observed throughout the school year to ensure students are placed in the class that best meets their needs.

Placement Tests Levels 1+

Our Placement Tests are designed to be a first evaluation of language skill level and starting placement.  Beginning with Test 1, please have your child ages 7+ advance through the test levels as she/he reaches more than 80% with as little direction from you as possible. Please reference your child's test results when registering for the school year.

Our 2016/2017 school year is in full swing.  All Wednesday and Saturday Krabbelgruppen as well as Preschool and Kindergarten classes are full. Please contact us if you would like to be entered in our contact list to receive information about registration for the next school year. Registration is expected to open in July 2017.

By registering, parents agree to our school policies (covering withdrawal, refunds, media consent).  Please take a moment to read them.

Please contact our Language Program Coordinator Anett Rollin with any questions regarding spot availability, placement and the registration process.

Certification and Testing

DANK Haus Kinderschule students can test their language ability by taking the National Exam offered by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG).  Additionally, students are offered the possibility to receive the Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (DSD), which is an internationally recognized German Language Certificate.  Please, contact Language Program Director Dr. Miglena Nikolova with questions regarding our curriculum as well as AATG and DSD testing.
