Brauhaus Documentary Screening & After Party

Join us at the gorgeously restored Chicago Brauhaus bar at DANK Haus, December 11th, 2021 at 8pm, to raise our steins and celebrate a one-time screening of Retriever’s production of Brauhaus, a documentary celebrating the long-time Lincoln Square staple. 

Initially begun in 2012, the film captures the sublime character of the iconic bar and restaurant, as well as its owners, the Kempf Brothers, and chronicles their controversial 2017 decision to close its doors after over half a century. 

RSVP for the screening of Brauhaus at The Davis Theater, located at 4614 North Lincoln Avenue—doors will open at 6pm and the film will be followed by a brief Q&A with the director and members of the production team. The reservation also includes admission to the special reception at the original Chicago Brauhaus bar, courtesy of DANK Haus, located at 4740 North Western Avenue. 

Directed by filmmaker Matt Richmond—himself a one-time bartender at the Brauhaus bar in his 20s—Brauhaus initially premiered last April amid the pandemic with an online screening to generate contributions for Chicago’s COVID-19 fund. Brauhaus is a documentary film revisiting the legacy of the beloved Chicago Brauhaus, a since-closed Northside staple owned and operated by dedicated restaurateurs, Harry and Geunter Kempf. The film chronicles the brothers’ decision to close the thriving neighborhood institution in 2017, after 52 years of business, and explores its role and impact as a community and cultural centerpiece, as well as recounting Harry’s personal journey, from war-torn Germany refugee to Lincoln Square icon.
