Course Description: In this 6 week online class, we will watch and discuss "Wendefilme" (films about and around the time when East and West Germany reunited) and the "Top Filme" of the last 20 years. By diving deep into these films you will learn about the socio-historical context of the times, but also analyze the content of the film itself.

You will watch, and discuss:

  • Das Leben der Anderen (2003, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck)
  • Goodbye Lenin (2003, Wolfgang Becker)
  • Ballon (2018, Michael Herbig)
  • Bornholmer Straße (2014, Christian Schwochow)

This class offers two independent sessions, and each is 6 weeks long. You can attend one session, or both, simply select the one(s) you want to attend during the registering process.

Class Structure: Students will have the opportunity to talk to their teacher and their classmates in 90 minute online sessions and practice their German in break-out rooms. In addition, students will receive assignments from their teacher.

Online Meeting Times: Saturdays, 9:30-11am CST (online)

Materials: You may be asked to buy these movies. All of them are available in the US, and some may be available for streaming. The instructor will help you with this. You can also use  the website Telescope Film to find out where which film is available.
